ISO 45001 Clause 6.1.4 and ISO 14001 Clause 6.1.4 - Planning of Action

ISO 45001 Clause 6.1.4 - Planning for Actions (Occupational Health and Safety Management System):

This clause of ISO 45001 focuses on planning actions related to risk and opportunity management, legal compliance, and emergency preparedness. The organization is required to plan:

  1. Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities: The organization must plan actions to address the risks and opportunities identified in Clause 6.1.2.2 and 6.1.2.3 of the standard. This includes both minimizing the potential negative effects (risks) and maximizing potential beneficial effects (opportunities) related to occupational health and safety (OH&S).

  2. Actions to Address Legal Requirements and Other Requirements: Plan actions to address compliance with legal requirements (as per Clause 6.1.3). This involves ensuring that the organization takes necessary measures to comply with OH&S-related laws and other requirements.

  3. Prepare for and Respond to Emergency Situations: Plan actions to prepare for and respond to emergency situations (as per Clause 8.2). This involves developing strategies, procedures, and resources to effectively manage OH&S emergencies when they occur.

  4. How to Integrate and Implement Actions: The organization should plan how it will integrate and implement the planned actions into its OH&S management system processes or other business processes. This means ensuring that the actions become an integral part of the organization's daily operations.

  5. How to Evaluate Effectiveness: Plan how to evaluate the effectiveness of these planned actions. This includes establishing metrics, indicators, or criteria to measure whether the actions taken have achieved their intended results in terms of improving OH&S performance.

ISO 14001 Clause 6.1.4 - Planning for Actions (Environmental Management System):

This clause of ISO 14001 addresses similar planning requirements but focuses on actions related to environmental aspects. The organization is required to plan:

  1. Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities: Plan actions to address the risks and opportunities identified in Clause 6.1.1 of the standard. This includes both minimizing the potential negative effects (risks) and maximizing potential beneficial effects (opportunities) related to environmental management.

  2. Actions to Address Legal Requirements and Other Requirements: Plan actions to address compliance with legal requirements and other requirements (as per Clause 6.1.3). This involves ensuring that the organization takes necessary measures to comply with environmental laws and other relevant requirements.

  3. Prepare for and Respond to Emergency Situations: Plan actions to prepare for and respond to emergency situations (as per relevant clauses). This includes developing strategies, procedures, and resources to effectively manage environmental emergencies when they occur.

  4. How to Integrate and Implement Actions: Plan how to integrate and implement the planned actions into its environmental management system processes or other business processes. This ensures that environmental considerations are embedded in daily operations.

  5. How to Evaluate Effectiveness: Plan how to evaluate the effectiveness of these planned actions. This includes establishing metrics, indicators, or criteria to measure whether the actions taken have achieved their intended environmental performance improvements.

In both cases, planning for actions is a critical element of these management systems, helping organizations systematically address risks, opportunities, compliance, emergency response, and continuous improvement in the areas of occupational health and safety or environmental management.

ISO 45001 Clause 6.1.3 and ISO 14001 Clause 6.1.3 - Compliance / legal requirements and other requirements

Both ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) standards require organizations to address compliance with legal requirements and other applicable requirements. While the specific clauses and terminologies may differ slightly, the fundamental principle is similar: organizations must identify, evaluate, and ensure compliance with relevant legal and other requirements related to their activities, products, and services.

ISO 45001 Clause 6.1.3 - Compliance with Legal Requirements and Other Requirements (Occupational Health and Safety Management System):

This clause focuses on ensuring that an organization establishes, implements, and maintains processes to:

  1. Identify Applicable Legal Requirements: Identify and have access to applicable legal requirements related to occupational health and safety (OHS) in the context of its operations and activities.

  2. Identify Other Requirements: Identify other requirements (non-legal) that the organization subscribes to or that are relevant to its OHSMS. These can include industry standards, guidelines, best practices, or internal requirements.

  3. Determine Compliance: Determine how these legal and other requirements apply to the organization's OHSMS.

  4. Take Action for Compliance: Ensure that the organization has processes in place to take action to comply with these requirements, which may include developing procedures, implementing controls, and assigning responsibilities.

  5. Review and Update: Regularly review and update the assessment of legal and other requirements to ensure ongoing compliance.

ISO 14001 Clause 6.1.3 - Compliance with Legal Requirements and Other Requirements (Environmental Management System):

This clause in ISO 14001 addresses similar requirements but specifically focuses on environmental aspects. Organizations must establish, implement, and maintain processes to:

  1. Identify Applicable Legal Requirements: Identify and have access to applicable legal requirements related to environmental aspects in the context of its operations and activities.

  2. Identify Other Requirements: Identify other requirements (non-legal) that the organization subscribes to or that are relevant to its environmental management system (EMS). These can include industry standards, guidelines, best practices, or internal requirements.

  3. Determine Compliance: Determine how these legal and other requirements apply to the organization's EMS.

In summary, both ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards require organizations to establish processes for identifying, evaluating, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements and other relevant requirements related to their specific focus areas (occupational health and safety or environmental management). These processes are essential for organizations to operate in accordance with legal and regulatory obligations while also considering additional requirements they have committed to or find relevant to their operations.
